Just the Particulars.
How early should I call the moving company?
As soon as you know you are going to move, it's time to call the moving company. Four to six weeks is a minimum time frame. If you provide a moving company a lot of lead-time, you will have an easier time scheduling your move. If you have extenuating circumstances, like a real estate closing, it's critical to be communicating with the moving company as early as possible.
How accurate are your estimates?
J & P is a competitive company and offers a free estimate for your move with our online estimate sheet. To get the most accurate estimate, please complete the form carefully and accurately. Take time to consider everything that has to be moved. If you leave out things, chances are your estimate will change.
What factors may change my estimate?
Underestimating- Make sure you have an accurate number of cartons/boxes estimated: a general rule of thumb is about 10-15 per room. Underestimating can result in a higher than expected final fee.
Assuming Everything is Included- Our basic service includes moving only. Packing and materials are not part of the basic estimate. If you desire these services, please let your sales representative know in advance so we can adjust your estimate accordingly.
Specialty Items/Disassembly- Items that require special attention such as pianos, grandfather clocks and appliances that need to be disassembled may affect your estimate. Let your sales representative know for the most accurate estimate.
Unusually Long Loading Distances- If you have a walk longer than 75 feet from the entrance of residence to the loading area of your residence, please let us know. Distance lengthens loading time and therefore affects the final estimate.
Additional stops- Our basic service assumes that all items will be retrieved from one location. Make sure to let your sales representative know about any additional stops that need to be made so an accurate estimate can be provided.
What is the best time of year to move?
The best time to move is the time that is best for your family. You should take into consideration the urgency of the move, your children's school year and any other pressing family circumstances. However, for us, the busiest times are summer, the end of the month and the end-of the year. If possible, you may want to schedule a move "off season".
Should I pack for the move myself?
Packing is time-consuming, exacting work. While you will need to do some packing yourself, we highly recommend using J & P professionals for most of your packing. By doing it yourself you assume responsibility for any damage that takes place en route to your location. You also commit yourself to additional hours of work during a very hectic time of life.
Whether you pack yourself, or you rely on J & P, please keep in mind the following tips:
- Label all boxes.
- Make sure all boxes are taped shut. This makes it easier for them to be stacked in the truck.
- Do not pack any liquids that might leak out onto the rest of the shipment.
- It is against state law to transport any propane or gasoline tanks in our trucks. (See "Is there anything that cannot be moved by J & P?" below for a list of other restricted items)
- Empty any gas and oil out of any equipment that will be moved.
- Remove all shades and light bulbs from lamps.
Please see us for additional information if you plan to pack your valuables yourself.
How do you move my appliances?
It is the owner's responsibility to prepare their appliances for travel. Appliances with moving parts like washer drums and icemakers should be securely fastened before transit. Appliances should be disconnected and serviced prior to our arrival.
The gas line of the dryer and the waterline for the washer must be capped before transit. Caps can be purchased at most hardware stores.
How long does it take to pack?
Most packing jobs take from one to two days, depending on the number of rooms you have, specialty items and if you have any areas that require special attention.
How long does it take to move?
Most local moves can usually be done within one day. Allow three to ten days for an interstate move, depending on the region of the country. However, this estimate depends upon many factors such as the time of year, the weather conditions, the amount of your shipment and the direction and distance you need to travel. Your estimate form should better help you and your J & P representative answer this question.
How and when do I pay for my move?
Most companies require a small deposit to secure your moving date. Moving costs are due COD and payable with cash, cashier's check, money order, or credit card.
Are my goods protected against loss and damage during transit?
State and federal law require ALL licensed movers to offer basic liability coverage at no cost to customers. However, you do have the option to purchase additional valuation. Please ask your sales representative for more information regarding your specific coverage needs.
Can you move my piano?
